Your backlinks are three times more than competitors, but your ranking is still lower. Where’s the problem?
Numbers aren’t everything. You have three times as many backlinks as your competitors, yet they rank five positions higher than you. This shows that the “structure” of backlinks matters more than the “quantity”.

I’ve seen far too many people obsessed with the number of backlinks.
“I have 200 backlinks, the competitor only has 80. Why are they ranking higher than me?”
Because Google doesn’t look at quantity alone. It looks at:
- Source quality – How many of your 200 come from spam sites with DR < 20?
- Source diversity – How many of your 200 are from the same type of directory?
- Anchor‑text distribution – How many of your 200 use the same keyword anchor text?
- Page authority – Where on the source page does your link appear?
- Relevance – Are the source sites related to your industry?
The competitor’s 80 backlinks might look like this:
- 60 from relevant platforms with DR 30+
- 15 from guest posts (links within the article body)
- 5 from industry media coverage
Your 200 backlinks might look like this:
- 150 from low‑quality directories with DR < 20
- 40 from the same type of generic directory
- 10 from unrelated industry sites
80 high‑quality > 200 low‑quality. That’s why the competitor ranks higher.
3‑minute self‑check
Open Ahrefs and ask yourself three questions:
Question 1: What percentage of your backlinks come from sources with DR 30+?
- If it’s < 30 % → your backlink quality is too low
Question 2: How many different types of sources do you have?
- If > 80 % come from the same type (e.g., all directories) → sources are too concentrated
Question 3: What share of your anchor‑text distribution is keyword‑based?
- If it’s > 30 % → unnatural, may be penalized by Google’s manipulation signals
How to fix it
If quality is too low: Stop spending time on directories with DR < 20. Focus your effort on platforms with DR 30+.
If sources are too concentrated: Expand to new channels—guest posts, resource pages, partners, podcasts.
If anchor text is unnatural: For all future backlinks, use your brand name so the keyword ratio naturally dilutes.
Bottom line
200 low‑quality backlinks < 50 high‑quality backlinks.
Don’t chase numbers. Chase structure.
Audit your backlink profile. Identify the weakest dimension and prioritize improving it.
That’s why competitors win with fewer backlinks.
